Take part in the competition of research works and win the prize - 200 lats!

Riga City Council City Development Department LIFE+ project “Riga Against Flood” implementation team in cooperation with Education and Information Centre of Riga City (RIIMC) is organizing a competition of research works for Riga City comprehensive school students of Forms 10-11. A prize of 200 lats will be awarded to the author of the best research work!

Since February 2010 a major research project “Riga Against Flood” is being carried out in Riga City with the support of European Union LIFE + programme. Within the framework of this project scientists are conducting research on flood threat in Riga and preparing forecasts on how flood, being the global warming-induced consequence of climate change, will influence Riga in future. Various recommendations and solutions for protecting the capital city from flood are also being worked out.

Within the framework of the project “Riga Against Flood”, a competition of research works for Riga City comprehensive school students of Forms 10-11 is being held. The competition has a motto: “We will always feel safe in Riga!”

Any student of Forms 10-11 from Riga City comprehensive schools, who, within the framework of secondary education programme in years 2011/2012, carries out a research work in environmental science (including environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology, nature conservation, environmental geography, environmental management and environmental engineering science), can participate in the competition.

The main condition is that the theme of the research work has to be related to the project theme – the influence of climate change and its consequence on a global or local scale. Choosing a suitable theme for the research work students can obtain double benefit - meet the requirements of the school programme and, by entering the competition, win one of the money prizes of 200, 100 and 50 lats.

The competition takes place from May 9, 2011 till April 30, 2012 (when research works are being carried out in Riga City comprehensive schools). The applications for participation in the competition have to be submitted until December 16, 2011. The research works should be handed in for evaluation until April 1, 2012. The winners will be announced and rewarded at the end of April or at the beginning of May, 2012.

More detailed information about the competition, themes for research works, their registration deadlines and submission, as well as criteria for evaluation and other information can be found in competition regulation, or on the project’s homepage www.rigapretpludiem.lv section “Research work competition”.

Yours faithfully,

LIFE+ team in cooperation with Education and Information Centre of Riga City
