The Project’s Progress assessed by Project Steering Committee
On December 16, this year, LIFE+ project’s “Riga Against Flood” Steering Committee meeting was held, during which several essential issues were discussed.
1.The Project team introduced the Steering Committee with the scenario for flood prevention planning to protect the territory of Riga City and for carrying out cost-benefit analysis that had been chosen by Riga City Council City Development department Project working group. Evaluating several possible scenarios the working group approved the scenario for the nearest future (from 2021 to 2050) with flooding likelihood of 1% or once in 100 years. The selected scenario is compatible with the present scenario with the flooding likelihood 0.5% or once in 200 years. The Steering Committee approved the use of the chosen scenario in further work.
2.Hydro technology and hydro melioration engineer Guntis Zakis presented the working version of the developed flood prevention measures for Riga City. Technical solutions for flood prevention are recommended for 8 territories under risk, out of which 5 have been provided with two alternative solutions. The developed flood prevention measures will be evaluated and prioritized by carrying out cost-benefit analysis.
3.Project planning expert Raina Rudzite introduced the representatives of the Steering Committee with the content and working version of the future Flood Risk Management Plan for the Riga City.
In order to inform the community about the future Flood Risk Management Plan for Riga City and the flood prevention measures included in the framework of the Project, as well as in order to listen to public opinion and suggestions, several public discussions are planned to be organized in February 2012.
